Edinburgh Named Best City in Europe, Third Globally
Scotland's capital just topped every European city in a worldwide ranking that asked 24,000 residents what makes their home special. Nineteen European cities made the top 50, with walkability, culture, and joy ranking highest.
Edinburgh has officially earned bragging rights as Europe's best city, landing third place globally in Time Out's 2026 ranking of the world's greatest urban destinations.
The Scottish capital beat out 149 other cities in a survey of more than 24,000 residents who rated their homes on quality of life, affordability, arts, food, nightlife, and green spaces. Time Out combined these responses with input from over 100 city experts to create the final list.
Melbourne took the top spot worldwide, with Shanghai in second. Edinburgh claimed third, followed closely by London in fourth place.
What makes Edinburgh shine? A stunning 91% of residents said they find joy in their everyday experiences there. They praised the city's walkability, food scene, vibrant culture, and beautiful green spaces.
"Edinburgh takes everything that makes life worth living and turns the dial up several notches," says Chiara Wilkinson, Time Out's deputy editor in the UK. The city combines the energy of urban life with the comfort of being able to walk anywhere, whether you're speed-walking between comedy shows at the famous Fringe Festival or exploring historic streets.

London earned its fourth place ranking with a near-perfect 99% approval rating for arts and culture. Residents also celebrated the capital's restaurant scene and abundance of parks.
The Ripple Effect
Europe dominated the rankings overall, claiming 19 of the top 50 spots. Swiss city Zürich came in 11th, praised for year-round appeal from cherry blossom springs to world-famous Christmas markets. Copenhagen, Kraków, Porto, Madrid, and Valencia all landed in the top 20.
The list included cities of all sizes and styles. Bath, Bilbao, Berlin, Antwerp, Naples, Amsterdam, Athens, Vienna, Dublin, and Lisbon all made the top 50. Even Paris, which ranked 22nd, earned a perfect score for its arts and culture scene.
These rankings show something beautiful: great cities come in many forms, and residents worldwide are finding genuine happiness where they live. From walkable neighborhoods to thriving food scenes, the elements that make cities livable are being celebrated and prioritized.
The survey proves that quality of life isn't just about size or fame, but about creating spaces where people genuinely enjoy their daily lives.
