Edison Firefighters Rescue 12 Trapped in Apartment Blaze

Police and firefighters pulled off a series of dramatic ladder rescues just before midnight in Edison, New Jersey, saving 12 people trapped by flames and smoke in their apartment building.

The fire broke out at 11:13 p.m. at Valley Manor Apartments on Marina Drive. Flames started in a lower-level unit and quickly filled the building with thick smoke, cutting off escape routes for residents on upper floors.

When crews arrived, they found people hanging out of third-floor windows, desperately seeking help. Firefighters and police officers immediately grabbed ladders and began bringing people down one by one.

"Between the police and the fire working together, they rescued approximately 10 to 12 people," Fire Chief Andrew Toth told reporters. Mayor Sam Joshi praised the coordinated effort, noting how quickly crews responded after getting reports of trapped residents.

One person was briefly hospitalized due to smoke inhalation but has since recovered and been released. The quick thinking of first responders meant no serious injuries occurred despite the dangerous conditions.

The Bright Side

About 36 firefighters responded to the scene, working together to bring everyone to safety. The teamwork between police and fire departments turned what could have been a tragedy into a story of rescue and survival.

While 45 to 50 residents have been temporarily displaced due to smoke and electrical damage, the community is rallying to help them find temporary housing. Officials confirmed the fire is not considered suspicious and remains under investigation.

Every single person made it out alive that night, a testament to the bravery and quick action of Edison's first responders who put themselves in danger to save their neighbors.
