Edmonton Hosts New World Rugby Nations Cup This July
Edmonton is bringing elite international rugby back to the city with a brand new tournament featuring 12 nations competing for World Cup glory. The inaugural World Rugby Nations Cup will pump $7 million into the local economy while giving young fans a chance to see world-class athletes up close.
International rugby is returning to Edmonton this summer, and it's bringing the world's best teams with it.
The city will host the inaugural World Rugby Nations Cup in July, featuring 12 teams from six continents who qualified for next year's Rugby World Cup. Canada's Men's Rugby Team kicks things off against Spain on July 4, followed by a double-header on July 11 with Tonga versus Spain and Canada versus Portugal.
Clarke Stadium will host the matches, welcoming over 5,000 fans for each game. "This is not just another set of games, this is a brand new international tournament," said Nathan Bombrys, Rugby Canada CEO.
For Edmonton native Austin Creighton, who plays for Team Canada, the opportunity to compete at home means everything. "We're proud to represent not just Canada but this wonderful city as well," Creighton said.

He's especially excited about what the tournament means for the next generation. "I think it's important to have these games here, because it gives people, especially the younger generation, a chance to experience that next level of rugby up close," Creighton explained.
The Ripple Effect
The tournament is about more than just the games themselves. The city expects the event to generate $7 million in economic activity, with Mayor Andrew Knack calling it "a huge win for our city" that places Edmonton "on the international stage."
Local rugby clubs will get their moment to shine too, with community programming planned throughout the event. "Edmonton's rugby community will be showcased on a national and international stage," said Rugby Alberta president Chris Cooke.
Tracy Bednard, CEO of Explore Edmonton, pointed out that sports tourism has become one of Alberta's fastest-growing economic sectors. The province is now leading Canada in this space.
Tickets are on sale now, giving rugby fans across North America a chance to see world-class competition without traveling overseas.
