Edo State Gives Free School Supplies to Thousands of Kids

Thousands of families in Benin City just got a boost as schools prepare to reopen. The Edo State education board distributed free school supplies at New Benin Market, including everything kids need to start the year strong.

The timing couldn't be better. With schools resuming across Edo State, parents like Vivian Ekiomado were worried about affording basic supplies. Now her children have backpacks, shoes, notebooks, and pencils ready to go.

"All my children will return to school on Monday because they now have the necessary materials," Ekiomado said. She called the support timely and said it takes real pressure off families trying to prepare for the school year.

The program goes beyond just handing out supplies. Education officials walked through the market talking with parents and guardians about why every child deserves to be in school, especially those with disabilities.

Ayewoh Oyakhilome, who leads the state education board, made the message clear. Education in public schools is completely free, and no child should be left at home or working the streets during school hours.

"Education is for all in Edo," Oyakhilome said. "There is no discrimination or tribalism. Every child matters."

The state has put real resources behind those words. Children with mild disabilities learn alongside their peers in regular classrooms. Students who need more support get help from specially trained teachers in programs designed just for them.

Gloria Lawani, the state coordinator for basic education, confirmed that teachers across Edo have received training to understand and support children with special needs. The goal is making sure every classroom is ready for every student.

The Ripple Effect

When one child gets to stay in school, whole communities benefit. Kids who attend regularly are more likely to break cycles of poverty, contribute to their local economy, and send their own children to school someday.

Edo's "SHINE Agenda" aims to prove that no child needs to be left behind when governments commit to inclusion and access. By removing financial barriers like the cost of school supplies, the state is betting that more families will keep their kids enrolled all year long.

The back-to-school packs are just one piece. Free public education, trained teachers for special needs, and active outreach to parents create a system where learning becomes possible for everyone.

As schools reopen across Edo State, thousands more backpacks will hit classroom floors this week than might have otherwise.
