Edo State Launches Airline to Boost Jobs and Economy

A Nigerian state is bringing commercial aviation back to a historic airport, and the move could unlock thousands of jobs while reconnecting an entire region to the world.

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo announced plans this week to establish a state-owned airline operating from Benin Airport. The governor met with Nigeria's Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, in Abuja to fast-track the ambitious project.

"Edo State needs a strong aviation presence to open up our economy," Okpebholo said. He's pushing to get planes in the air before upcoming elections, calling the airline essential to the state's economic future.

The state isn't going it alone. South African investors have already committed to providing aircraft and technical expertise, demonstrating international confidence in the project's commercial viability.

Benin Airport once served as a major hub during the heyday of the now-defunct Okada Air, connecting Nigeria's old Midwest region to destinations across the country and beyond. Keyamo noted the airport still has the infrastructure to reclaim that status.

To move quickly, the aviation ministry created a technical committee to handle regulatory compliance and coordinate between Edo State, investors, and federal agencies. The committee will report progress weekly, with a state representative working directly with federal air transport officials.
