Egypt Clears Surgery Waitlist for 43,000 Patients in 1 Month

Forty-three thousand Egyptians received surgeries they desperately needed in just one month, thanks to a bold national initiative to eliminate medical waiting lists across the country.

Between December 27, 2025 and January 27, 2026, hospitals throughout Egypt performed complex procedures including open-heart surgeries, kidney transplants, cochlear implants, and cancer treatments. The presidential initiative brought together government hospitals, military facilities, private institutions, and civil society organizations to tackle a problem that had left tens of thousands waiting for critical care.

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi allocated three billion Egyptian pounds to accelerate treatment for urgent cases. The funding aimed to ease patient suffering as part of a broader social protection package focused on healthcare access.

The numbers tell a powerful story of coordinated action. Beyond the 43,000 surgeries, doctors shifted 3,262 patients to medication-based treatments that eliminated their need for operations. Another 5,443 patients received procedures through the General Organization for Health Insurance.

Perhaps most remarkably, 86,609 patients received necessary medications even though they weren't covered by health insurance. This safety net ensured that financial barriers didn't prevent people from getting the care they needed.

Since the initiative launched, more than three million Egyptians have benefited from expanded healthcare services. Multiple specialties participated, including ophthalmology, cardiology, orthopedics, neurosurgery, and oncology.

The program involved collaboration across Egypt's entire healthcare system. The Health Ministry, Higher Education Ministry, Armed Forces medical facilities, police hospitals, and private healthcare providers all contributed resources and expertise.

The Ripple Effect

When surgical waiting lists grow, the impact extends far beyond individual patients. Families put life plans on hold. Breadwinners can't work. Children miss school to care for ailing parents.

By clearing these backlogs, Egypt isn't just performing surgeries. The initiative is restoring income to families, returning parents to their children, and giving people back their futures. Each operation creates ripples of stability and hope through entire households and communities.

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly's recent review showed that 41,126 cases remain on waiting lists, providing a clear roadmap for continued progress. The initiative continues to prevent new backlogs from forming across medical specialties.

Egypt is proving that with political will and coordinated resources, national healthcare challenges can be tackled at remarkable speed.
