Egypt Hosts 5,000 Athletes for Africa's University Games

Over 5,000 university students from across Africa gathered in Cairo this month for the 12th All-Africa University Games, the continent's biggest celebration of student athletics and academic achievement.

The British University in Egypt opened the games by hosting the African Scientific Conference on University Sports, bringing together academics and sports leaders to share research on everything from healthy campus initiatives to using artificial intelligence in athletics. The conference featured 130 research papers focused on making university sports more inclusive, sustainable, and impactful.

University President Mohamed Loutfi said the event shows how sports and scientific research can work together to build stronger communities. The university serves as the headquarters for the Federation of Africa University Sports and acts as the exclusive academic partner across Africa and the Arab region for the International University Sports Federation.

The Ripple Effect

The games represent more than athletic competition. They're creating a network of cooperation among African universities that extends far beyond the playing field.

Students and university leaders from dozens of countries are exchanging ideas about disability inclusion in sports, anti-doping programs, talent identification, and how athletics can promote peace and sustainable development. These conversations are happening in workshops, forums, and informal gatherings throughout the two-week event.

Former Minister of Youth and Sports Ashraf Sobhy emphasized that university sports create vital connections among young people across the continent. By pairing athletic competition with academic conferences, Cairo 2026 is turning a sports event into a platform for building lasting partnerships between African institutions.

The British University in Egypt is providing campus facilities, organizational support, and accommodation for visiting university presidents and delegations. The university also hosted the torch relay ceremony that kicked off the games, bringing together student athletes in a symbol of unity before competitions began.

The games run through September 16, giving thousands of young Africans the chance to compete, collaborate, and create connections that will strengthen universities across the continent for years to come.
