Egypt Launches E-Visa System to Welcome 30M Tourists

Getting into Egypt is about to get a whole lot easier for millions of travelers worldwide.

This August, Egypt will launch a new electronic visa system that replaces traditional visa stickers with dynamic QR codes. Tourism and Antiquities Minister Sherif Fathy announced that travelers can now generate digital entry passes up to 48 hours before their flights through an official online platform, foreign travel agencies, or Egyptian tour operators.

The system transforms what used to be a waiting game at airport immigration counters. Visitors from 118 countries currently eligible for visas on arrival can now complete most paperwork before boarding their planes. Upon landing, they'll breeze through entry using electronic payment methods or self-service kiosks at Egyptian airports.

The digital upgrade arrives as Egypt sets its sights on an ambitious tourism milestone. The country aims to host 30 million visitors annually by 2030, nearly tripling its current numbers. Between 170 and 180 nationalities already benefit from various entry accommodations into Egypt.

To prepare for the influx, Egypt is dramatically expanding its hospitality infrastructure. The nation currently offers about 235,000 hotel rooms, with tens of thousands more under construction. Industry experts project Egypt will need to reach 500,000 rooms to comfortably accommodate 30 million annual guests.
