Egypt Startups Raise $11M After Aswan Bootcamp Success

✨ Faith Restored

Sixty-one tech startups in Upper Egypt secured $11 million in investments after completing a government-backed training program. Even when international funding dried up mid-program, Egypt's tech agency stepped in to ensure every entrepreneur could finish.

When international funding unexpectedly disappeared halfway through their startup training program, 61 young Egyptian entrepreneurs faced a crushing setback. Instead of letting them fail, Egypt's Information Technology Industry Development Agency made a powerful choice: fund the rest themselves.

The Aswan Bootcamp Series just wrapped up with remarkable results. Participating startups collectively secured 200 million Egyptian pounds (about $11 million USD) in investments, proving that Upper Egypt's entrepreneurial talent can compete on regional and global stages.

The program launched in November 2024 as a partnership between ITIDA, Plug and Play, and USAID. More than 150 startups from across Upper Egypt applied for intensive technical training and mentorship from industry experts. Three phases in, funding from international partners stopped flowing due to shifts in development cooperation policies.

ITIDA refused to abandon the entrepreneurs mid-journey. The agency committed its own resources to complete all training sessions, mentorship programs, and investor connections originally promised to the 61 selected startups.

Ahmed Elzaher, CEO of ITIDA, emphasized this wasn't just about one program. "What we are witnessing today in Aswan is a practical model of efforts to support and empower young entrepreneurs across Egypt, particularly in Upper Egypt, which holds significant potential for building startups capable of scaling, exporting, and competing regionally and globally," he said.

The closing event at the Digital Egypt Innovation Hub in Aswan drew the city's governor, university leaders, and venture capital partners. Startups presented their success stories, sharing how the program helped them refine business models and prepare for growth.

The Ripple Effect

This investment wave extends far beyond individual companies. ITIDA operates 19 innovation hubs across Egypt's governorates, deliberately building tech ecosystems outside Cairo. The agency also launched EgyptInnovate, a digital platform connecting startups with investors, funding opportunities, and market insights nationwide.

Karima El Hakim from Plug and Play Africa called the program "a successful model of public-private collaboration." The notable progress of participating startups, she added, reflects the immense potential Egyptian entrepreneurs bring when given proper support and global connections.

Upper Egypt has traditionally seen less venture capital attention than Cairo, making these results particularly meaningful for regional economic development. Young people across these governorates now have proof that location doesn't limit startup success.

ITIDA plans to expand similar programs to new regions, ensuring more Egyptian entrepreneurs get access to world-class training and investor networks regardless of where they live.
