Eileen Gu Survives Scary Crash, Makes Olympic Slopestyle Final

Olympic champion Eileen Gu turned a nightmare start into a comeback story on day one of the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina.

The two-time gold medalist crashed during her first slopestyle qualifying run, putting her entire Olympic campaign in jeopardy. With just one more chance to qualify for the finals, Gu needed to deliver under pressure.

She did exactly that. Gu nailed her second run with a score of 75.30, securing second place in qualifications and punching her ticket to the finals behind Switzerland's defending champion Mathilde Gremaud.

"I don't know why I keep doing this at the Olympics," Gu laughed after her dramatic qualification. "This happened in 2022 as well where I fell in the first run and it all came down to the last run."

The Chinese-American skier says she doesn't know why she can't make it easy on herself and land her first attempt. "Maybe I like to keep people on their toes, maybe I like to give a little show, I don't know," she joked.

Gu's recovery shows what separates champions from everyone else. When the pressure was highest and one more mistake would have ended her Olympic dreams before they really started, she delivered her best performance.

"Qualies day is always a bit more nerve-wracking," Gu admitted. "Hopefully I'm more consistent in the finals."

She mentioned having a completely different routine prepared for the final round. If her qualification performance under pressure is any indication, the other competitors should be worried about what Gu has planned next.
