El Salvador Tourism Soars 36% With Record April Numbers

El Salvador just proved that positive change can transform a nation's reputation and economy in record time.

The country welcomed 473,000 international visitors in April, a 36% increase from the same month last year. That makes April the strongest month so far in 2026, with steady growth since January building toward an impressive milestone.

From January through April, 1.7 million people visited El Salvador, up 35% from the first four months of 2025. Guatemala led the way with 231,000 visitors in April alone, followed by the United States with 105,000 and Honduras with 83,000.

The numbers tell a story of remarkable recovery and momentum. In 2025, El Salvador set a national record with 4.1 million international visitors and generated $3.6 billion in tourism revenue. Officials are now projecting 4.2 million visitors for 2026, and current trends suggest they'll easily hit that target.

Tourism Minister Morena Valdez confirmed the early year results show the country is right on track. Corsatur president Alejandra Durán noted that April marked a new monthly high for the year, with steady growth from both Central American and North American markets.

The Ripple Effect

El Salvador's tourism boom isn't happening by accident. The growth stems from improved security perceptions, expanded air access, and strategic investments in beaches, airports, and key travel corridors.

Surf City along the La Libertad coast has become a major draw for beach lovers and wave seekers. The volcano to sea circuit, which connects inland volcanoes with Pacific coast destinations, has strengthened the country's appeal for quick regional getaways.

Many visitors from Guatemala and Honduras now combine beach trips with day excursions to the San Salvador volcano and coffee growing areas. Meanwhile, U.S. travelers are returning in greater numbers thanks to direct flights and growing confidence in safety.

The transformation has caught global attention. According to UN Tourism data, El Salvador now ranks among the fastest growing tourism destinations worldwide. That's a remarkable turnaround for a country that struggled with security concerns just a few years ago.

Both land border crossings and airport arrivals contributed to April's record numbers. Officials reported no major travel disruptions during the period and expect the momentum to carry into the second half of the year.

The Ministry of Tourism has set an interim target of 2.5 million international visitors by the end of June. With four strong months already in the books and summer travel season approaching, that goal looks well within reach.
