Electric Cars Now Cheaper Than Gas Cars for First Time

For the first time ever, electric cars cost less than traditional gas vehicles, marking a historic milestone in the shift toward cleaner transportation.

New data from AutoTrader shows the average electric vehicle now sells for £42,620, compared to £43,405 for gas cars. While the £785 difference might seem small, it represents a fundamental change in the affordability of green technology.

The price drop comes from substantial discounts on new EVs, averaging 11.7% compared to 10% for gas vehicles. Manufacturers are eager to make electric cars accessible as production costs fall and competition heats up.

Government incentives are helping drive prices even lower. The UK's Electric Car Grant offers up to £3,750 off sustainably produced models priced under £37,000, with a secondary £1,500 grant available for more vehicles.

The Ripple Effect

This pricing shift follows the pattern of most new technology, where costs start high but drop as manufacturing matures. For EVs, that process took longer than smartphones or TVs, but the transformation is now happening rapidly.

The timing couldn't be better. Used EV prices have also reached parity with used gas models, and April 2026 marked the best month ever for UK electric vehicle sales.

Budget-friendly options are multiplying fast. MG emerged as the most in-demand EV brand, while Renault's retro-styled Renault 5 became the most popular model, beating out competitors from Jaecoo and MG.

New affordable models keep arriving. Hyundai just launched the compact Ioniq 3 with a 300-mile range at an attractive price, while the charming Renault Twingo is winning hearts with its accessible cost.

Combined with improving battery range, better home charging regulations, and ongoing fuel price uncertainty, the case for switching to electric has never been stronger. The competition among manufacturers means buyers benefit from better vehicles at lower prices every month.
