Imagine sipping coffee while racing across the ocean at 29 mph without hearing or feeling a single wave. That's exactly what passengers experience on Sweden's new P-12 Business, a revolutionary electric ferry that's rewriting the rules of water travel.

The secret is underwater wings called hydrofoils. As the vessel speeds up, these submerged wings generate lift and raise the entire hull above the surface, like an airplane taking off. No contact with waves means no pounding, no noise, and no vibration.

Swedish company Candela already proved the concept works in real life. The standard P-12 model has been carrying passengers across Stockholm since 2024, quietly building a reputation as the future of urban water transit. This new Business version takes everything that worked and wraps it in luxury.

An onboard computer constantly adjusts the foil angles 100 times per second, smoothing out choppy conditions the same way a fighter jet's control surfaces maintain stability. Passengers barely notice they're on water at all.

The environmental wins go beyond silence. Flying above the water instead of plowing through it cuts energy use by 80% compared to conventional boats. The ferry produces almost zero wake, protecting coral reefs and shorelines that normally get battered by wave after wave from traditional vessels.

Two electric motors deliver 429 combined horsepower, pushing the boat 46 miles on a single charge at cruising speed. A 300-kilowatt fast charger tops up the batteries during a regular port stop, not overnight.

The Ripple Effect

The first P-12 Business ferries are already shipping to three locations that desperately need cleaner, quieter transport. In Mumbai, the boats will connect the iconic Gateway of India to the new Navi Mumbai airport, replacing aging wooden diesel ferries that have served one of the world's busiest waterfront corridors for decades. Resorts in the Maldives will use them to shuttle guests across pristine waters without damaging the fragile marine ecosystems below. Saudi Arabia is bringing them in as part of its push to modernize coastal transport.

Inside, the 16-passenger cabin looks nothing like a typical ferry. Plush carpeting, genuine legroom, a coffee bar, WiFi, and USB-C charging at every seat create an atmosphere closer to a VIP airport lounge than a boat. Some configurations swap regular seats for sofas and side tables facing panoramic ocean views.

Gustav Hasselskog, Candela's founder, calls it a magic carpet ride. The combination of speed, silence, efficiency, and environmental protection represents the biggest leap forward in water transport in generations.
