Electrocuted Bald Eagle Soars Free After 25-Week Recovery

After 25 weeks of medical care and physical therapy, a bald eagle electrocuted in California's Salinas area has returned to the sky.

The large male eagle arrived at SPCA Monterey County's wildlife rescue center on December 21, 2025, with two serious problems. Medical staff discovered a fractured shoulder bone and signs of electrocution, injuries that made his survival uncertain.

Electrocution creates a unique challenge for wildlife rehabilitators because symptoms can take days or even weeks to fully appear. The team couldn't predict how the eagle's injuries would develop, but they started intensive treatment immediately.

Over the next six months, wildlife experts gave the bird specialized medication and physical therapy designed for his specific injuries. The eagle needed time to heal the fracture and overcome the slow-developing effects of the electrical shock.

By late May, rehabilitators determined he had regained enough strength to survive in the wild. On Friday, they brought him back to his natural habitat and watched as he prepared for his first flight in months.
