Elizabeth Smart Competes in Bodybuilding, Celebrates Her Body

Elizabeth Smart stood on stage in a bikini and heels, flexing muscles she built through months of grueling training. The 38-year-old advocate and mom of three never imagined she'd compete in bodybuilding, but her Instagram post celebrating the moment sparked an outpouring of support.

Smart admitted she initially hesitated to share photos from the competition. She worried people would judge her or think she was no longer worthy of her advocacy work for missing persons and abuse survivors.

But those fears felt eerily familiar. They were the same shameful thoughts she recognized from survivors everywhere.

So she decided to go public, posting competition photos alongside a message about celebrating her body after everything it's endured. "My body has carried me through every worst day, every hellish grueling experience, it's created and nurtured three beautiful children," she wrote.

Smart was abducted from her bedroom in Salt Lake City at age 14 in 2002. Police rescued her nine months later, and she's since dedicated her life to helping other survivors.

Bodybuilding became an unexpected path to healing. The training pushed her physically and mentally, challenging her not to give up when things got hard.

"I am so proud of my body, and I want to celebrate it," Smart wrote. She explained that she refuses to live a half-life, holding back from new experiences because of fear or shame.
