Engineer Donates $750 Bonus to Cancer Research After Wife's Recovery

When Charlie Smillie won $750 in staff bonuses last year, he never even put it in his pocket. The Livingston-based engineer donated every penny to Cancer Research UK at Christmas, inspired by his wife Sheila's successful battle against breast cancer.

The decision came from a deeply personal place. Sheila was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023 while training to become a nurse at the University of the West of Scotland. She fought through extensive radiotherapy and chemotherapy, and today she's back working at Lady Home Hospital in Lanark.

Charlie, who has worked at John Heaney Electrical for 13 years, made the donation quietly. But his gesture caught the attention of local MP Gregor Poynton, who sent an official House of Commons letter to thank him for his "incredibly kind and selfless" act.

"I never had the money in my pocket so it wasn't a difficult decision," Charlie said from his home in Fauldhouse. "If my donation helps one person in some way, then great."

The official parliamentary letter arrived at Charlie's office as a surprise. His boss, Mark Heaney, called him in to show him the envelope bearing the House of Commons seal.

"Sheila was as proud as anything when she read the letter," Charlie said. "It has made us all feel really good."
