England Pharmacies Offer Free 7-Minute Cholesterol Tests

Getting your cholesterol checked just became as easy as picking up a prescription.

Starting this autumn, around 100 pharmacies across England will offer free seven-minute cholesterol tests to adults aged 40 to 84. The quick pin-prick test analyzes cholesterol levels on the spot, allowing pharmacists to provide lifestyle advice or recommend treatment immediately.

The program addresses a major health challenge. Heart disease and strokes remain leading causes of death, but many people don't know they're at risk until it's too late.

A pilot program in north London tested 2,493 patients at 61 pharmacies earlier this year. Nearly one in five people were found at high risk of heart attack or stroke within the next decade, and 88 people started life-saving statin treatments they didn't know they needed.

David Webb, chief pharmaceutical officer for England, calls local pharmacies "a vital first line of defense against serious illness." By bringing screenings to high streets where people already shop, the program removes barriers that keep many from getting tested at GP surgeries.

Eligible patients will receive both a cholesterol test and blood pressure check during their visit. Results arrive by email, giving people a clear picture of their cardiovascular health without waiting weeks for appointments.

The Ripple Effect

This initiative represents more than convenient health checks. It's part of England's 10-Year Health Plan to move healthcare closer to where people actually live and work.

The program particularly benefits communities facing the highest cardiovascular disease rates. Many neighborhoods with limited access to GP appointments now have a screening option within walking distance.

By spring 2027, thousands more people will know their numbers and understand their risk factors. Armed with that knowledge, they can make changes today that prevent heart attacks and strokes tomorrow.
