English Golfer Jack Whaley Wins US Amateur Championship

A 22-year-old golfer from Doncaster just pulled off one of amateur golf's greatest achievements, and the moment he sank the winning putt had everyone reaching for tissues.

Jack Whaley defeated American favorite Jay Leng Jr. 4&3 in a grueling 36-hole final at Merion Golf Club on Sunday to claim the US Amateur Championship. The win makes him only the third English golfer to capture the prestigious title in its 131-year history.

The match was a roller coaster from start to finish. Whaley chipped in for birdie on the very first hole, taking an early lead that energized his game. But Leng Jr., ranked 23rd in the world amateur rankings, fought back hard, turning the tide and going two up through 16 holes.

Whaley refused to fold. The Florida State University student wrestled back control on the 22nd hole, then extended his lead to three up with just four holes remaining. On the 33rd hole, he gave himself a 20-foot birdie putt for the championship.

When that putt dropped, pure joy erupted. Whaley turned and embraced his caddie and dad Andy, while his mom sprinted onto the green for a family hug that captured what sports should be about.

"My dad has helped me so much this week," Whaley said through tears. "I can't thank him enough for it. He was just telling me, just keep going, just keep playing."

The victory does more than secure bragging rights. Whaley has now earned automatic invitations to The Masters, the US Open, and The Open at St Andrews in 2027. He's also positioned himself perfectly for a captain's pick for September's Walker Cup.

Why This Inspires

Ranked just 90th in the world amateur rankings, Whaley wasn't supposed to win this tournament. He scraped into the top 64 players just to make the match play bracket, then kept battling through opponent after opponent.

His secret weapon? Years of grassroots golf experience. Whaley credits his county golf background and time with the Sheffield Union for preparing him for high-pressure match play. While fancier players relied on natural talent, he trusted the fundamentals learned on modest local courses.

"It opened my eyes that my game is good enough," he said simply. Sometimes believing you belong is half the battle.

The last English player to win this championship was Matt Fitzpatrick in 2013, who went on to win the US Open in 2022. Before that, you have to rewind all the way to 1911, when Harold Hilton claimed the title.
