Erie County Unites Partners to Lift Working Families

Thousands of working families in Erie County, Ohio are employed, raising kids, and doing everything right. Yet rising costs for housing, utilities, and healthcare keep pushing them toward the edge.

These households earn above the federal poverty level but live one unexpected car repair or medical bill away from crisis. Now, United Way of Erie County is coordinating a community-wide response to change that reality.

The organization is aligning local partners around one shared goal: reducing poverty by strengthening stability today while creating pathways to opportunity tomorrow. Four interconnected areas form their strategy: income, education, health, and emergency support.

Housing stability sits at the center of the effort. United Way recently invested in the Erie Metropolitan Housing Authority to expand tenant education programs that help families secure and keep stable housing.

"This investment will allow us to deliver practical, meaningful tenant education that supports housing stability and self-sufficiency," said Ralph Chamberlain, the authority's executive director. The "Ready to Rent" program prepares participants for successful tenancies and helps reduce barriers.

The approach recognizes how hardship cascades through families. Housing instability affects health. Food insecurity impacts education. A crisis in one area quickly spreads to others.

United Way is also partnering with Bowling Green State University Firelands to create workforce development and leadership pathways. Dean Allia Carter confirmed the university's ongoing collaboration with United Way to prepare residents for long-term success.

This coordinated approach treats poverty as a solvable puzzle rather than an isolated emergency. By strengthening the entire support system, Erie County is building a safety net that catches families before they fall into crisis. When working families achieve stability, the entire community grows stronger.
