Erie Police Raise $4K for Charity With No Shave November

Police officers in Erie, Pennsylvania found a creative way to turn facial hair into thousands of dollars for people in need.

The Erie Bureau of Police temporarily relaxed its grooming rules last November, allowing officers to grow beards and mustaches in exchange for donations. The result? More than 150 officers participated and together they raised $4,000 for four local nonprofit organizations.

Police Chief Rick Lorah presented the donations to the charities in March, celebrating the success of the department's first No Shave November event. Officers and members of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 7 contributed to the fundraiser.

The concept was simple. Officers who typically follow strict facial hair policies got the rare opportunity to grow out their beards for an entire month. In return, they made charitable contributions that went directly to community organizations.

The Ripple Effect

What started as a fun department challenge created meaningful support for Erie's nonprofit sector. The $4,000 raised will help local organizations continue their work serving the community throughout the year.

The initiative also strengthened the connection between law enforcement and the residents they serve. Officers showed they're willing to step outside their usual protocols to make a positive difference in their hometown.
