Estonia's AI Shuttle Brings Public Transit to Your Doorstep

Getting people to ditch their cars for public transit has always stumbled on one frustrating problem: buses and trains don't go all the way to your door.

Enter MiCa, a smart electric shuttle designed in Estonia that's changing how cities think about transportation. This autonomous vehicle seats eight passengers and quietly navigates city streets at speeds up to 25 km/h, filling the gap between transit hubs and final destinations.

The shuttle uses artificial intelligence to understand its surroundings in real time. It recognizes pedestrian crossings, spots moving objects, identifies intersections, and plans its route accordingly.

"When the vehicle understands what's around it, then it's able to see where the road is, where objects are possibly moving," explains Kristjan Vilipõld, Product Manager at AuVe Tech, the company behind MiCa. The technology has been refined through testing across 17 countries including Japan, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States.

Founded in 2018 with Tallinn University of Technology, AuVe Tech manufactures everything in Estonia to maintain quality control. Each shuttle takes just one week to build, though half the vehicle consists of electronics, sensors, and computers.

The challenge they're tackling matters deeply for urban life. Too many cars clog city centers, but convincing people to use public transportation requires solving that frustrating final stretch home.

"We see that the biggest bottleneck is not necessarily the quality or price of public transportation, but the fact that public transportation doesn't take you to your doorstep," says Taavi Rõivas, Chairman of AuVe Tech's Supervisory Board. "We provide this last mile."

The Ripple Effect

MiCa's success shows how solving one small problem can transform entire transportation systems. When cities make public transit truly convenient, more people leave cars at home, reducing traffic congestion and emissions.

The EU-backed company recently upgraded MiCa with enhanced AI capabilities including dynamic object reaction and overtaking vehicle detection. Designed to operate autonomously for up to 20 hours daily, these shuttles could revolutionize how people move through cities.
