Ethiopia and China Train Thousands in Tech Skills

Ethiopian students are gaining cutting-edge tech skills through a partnership that's preparing thousands of young people for the jobs of tomorrow.

The collaboration between Ethiopia and China focuses on teaching industrial robotics, mechatronics, and sensor technologies at the Ethiopian Technical and Vocational Training Institute in Addis Ababa. Since launching in April 2021, the program has trained thousands of local teachers and students in practical skills that companies actually need.

The initiative uses a "Chinese + Vocational Skills" model developed by the Confucius Institute and Luban Workshop. Students learn the Chinese language alongside technical training, giving them unique advantages in Ethiopia's growing industrial sector.

State Minister of Labor and Skills Teshale Berecha says the partnership has "delivered tangible results" in preparing Ethiopian youth for current and future job markets. The program directly supports investment promotion and industrial growth across the country.

Ethiopian officials celebrated the partnership's success during Chinese Language Day on Friday in Addis Ababa. The event highlighted how the collaboration goes beyond just education, strengthening cultural exchanges and opening doors for Ethiopia's young workforce.

The workshop's success is creating waves throughout Ethiopia's economy. Chinese companies operating in Ethiopia now have access to skilled local workers who can communicate effectively and operate advanced technology.

Biruk Kedir, director general of the institute, notes that Chinese language proficiency has become an essential skill for Ethiopian youth. The strengthening ties between the two countries bring real social and economic benefits to students who master both language and technical abilities.

The model offers a blueprint for sustainable workforce development. Rather than simply providing jobs, the partnership creates lasting skills that Ethiopian workers can build careers on for decades to come.
