Ethiopia Builds AI Sector With Help From Israeli Innovators

Ethiopia is writing its own startup story, and it's getting help from one of the world's most innovative nations.

The East African country has established a national artificial intelligence center and plans to open an AI-focused university by 2027. Ethiopian Ambassador Tesfaye Yitayeh told The Jerusalem Post that the government is betting big on technology to transform its economy.

"Israel calls itself a Start-Up Nation, and Ethiopia is also trying its own version of a start-up," Yitayeh explained. "But it is in the infant stage."

The partnership between the two nations goes far beyond tech talk. Israeli companies are already on the ground in Ethiopia, sharing expertise in drip irrigation, water management, and high-value crop production.

The collaboration is already bearing fruit, literally. Thanks to training from Israel's MASHAV development agency, Ethiopia now exports avocados to European markets. Israeli irrigation technologies are helping Ethiopian farmers grow crops year-round, even during dry seasons.

"Israelis are good at using a scarce resource, that is water," Yitayeh said. "Efficiently, effectively using water in terms of water management."

Energy is another bright spot in Ethiopia's transformation. The country recently opened the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, which adds more than 5,000 megawatts of electricity annually. The massive hydroelectric project on the Blue Nile is already attracting foreign manufacturers to Ethiopia's industrial parks with its promise of cheap, clean power.

Ethiopia is now exporting electricity to Kenya, Tanzania, Sudan, and Djibouti, with plans to supply South Sudan and Somalia next. The ambassador believes his country is positioned to become "the electric powerhouse in the Horn of Africa."

Israeli investors are particularly interested in Ethiopia's new ultramodern airport under construction southeast of Addis Ababa. Israeli companies are eyeing opportunities in cybersecurity and digital infrastructure for the project.

The Ripple Effect

Ethiopia's tech ambitions could reshape opportunities across East Africa. When the planned AI university opens its doors, it will train a new generation of Ethiopian technologists who can apply artificial intelligence across economic sectors from agriculture to healthcare.

The partnership shows how knowledge sharing between nations can spark genuine progress. Israel's experience turning desert into farmland and building a thriving tech sector despite limited resources offers a practical playbook for Ethiopia's own development goals.

With 5,000 megawatts of new clean energy and a generation of young people training in cutting-edge technology, Ethiopia is building the infrastructure for sustainable growth that could lift millions.

The relationship between Ethiopia and Israel, formalized in 1956, continues to deepen through investment forums and official visits, including one by Israeli President Isaac Herzog last year. What started with military cooperation has blossomed into partnerships across agriculture, water management, digital economy, and logistics.

Ethiopia's version of a startup nation is just getting started, but the foundation is being laid today.
