Ethiopia Builds AI University, Looks to Israel for Tech Help

Ethiopia is building an artificial intelligence university and positioning itself as Africa's next major tech hub, with Israel serving as its model and partner.

The East African nation established a national AI center three years ago and plans to open a dedicated AI university within the next two years. Ambassador Tesfaye Yitayeh told The Jerusalem Post that Ethiopia wants to follow Israel's "Start-Up Nation" playbook, though he acknowledges the effort is still in its "infant stage."

"Hopefully, after five or six years, we will be able to work using AI in different economic sectors," Yitayeh explained. He added that Israel's advanced AI capabilities make it an ideal partner for Ethiopia's ambitious technology goals.

The partnership between the two nations goes far beyond tech. Israeli companies are already active across Ethiopia in agriculture, manufacturing, and infrastructure projects, with particular strength in irrigation technology and high-value crop production.

Israel's MASHAV international development agency has trained Ethiopian agronomists and horticulturists, playing what Yitayeh calls a "pivotal role" in avocado cultivation. Ethiopia now exports avocados to European markets thanks to that partnership.

Water management remains a key area where Ethiopia seeks Israeli expertise. While the country has far more natural water resources than Israel, it struggles with seasonal scarcity and year-round production challenges.

Israeli drip irrigation technologies are being spread throughout Ethiopia, helping farmers maximize efficiency. "Israelis are good at using a scarce resource, that is water," Yitayeh said.

The relationship extends to major infrastructure projects too. Israeli companies are showing strong interest in cybersecurity and digital systems for a new ultramodern airport currently under construction southeast of Addis Ababa.

Ethiopia recently inaugurated the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam on the Blue Nile, transforming the country's energy capacity and attracting foreign investment. President Isaac Herzog visited last year, along with an investment forum that brought Israeli business leaders to see opportunities firsthand.

The Ripple Effect

Ethiopia's tech ambitions could reshape opportunities across East Africa. With 120 million people and a growing economy, the country's investment in AI education could train a new generation of African innovators and attract international tech companies to the continent.

The partnership shows how knowledge sharing between nations can create wins on both sides, with Israel expanding its influence in Africa while Ethiopia gains access to proven innovation strategies.
