Ethiopia Gives Refugees Digital IDs and New Freedom

Refugees who escaped Al-Shabaab and spent years stuck in camps finally have a path forward. Ethiopia's new digital ID program is giving them something many thought they'd never have: freedom.

The Ethiopian government partnered with UNHCR to create the Fayda system, which means "value" in Amharic. The program issues digital IDs to refugees throughout the country, opening doors that were previously locked shut.

With their new IDs, refugees can travel anywhere in Ethiopia without restriction. They can enroll their children in schools, apply for jobs, and build real lives instead of waiting in camps indefinitely.
