Ethiopia Opens Modern Airport to Boost Trade and Tourism

A modernized airport in Debre Markos, Ethiopia is now open for business, promising to transform economic opportunities across the country's northwest region.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed inaugurated the upgraded Nigus Tekle Haimanot Airport in July 2026, calling it a transformative investment that answers years of community requests. The project strengthens Ethiopia's transport infrastructure and connects previously isolated areas to domestic and international markets.

The airport features a 2,400-meter runway built to handle larger aircraft like the Boeing 737 and Bombardier Q400. This means more passengers and cargo can flow through the region, with up to three daily flights planned once operations reach full capacity.
