Ethiopia Plants 800 Million Trees in a Single Day

Millions of Ethiopians rolled up their sleeves today to plant 800 million trees in a single day, turning environmental restoration into the country's largest collective action movement.

The 2026 Green Legacy Initiative brought together everyone from cabinet ministers to everyday citizens across Ethiopia. Finance Minister Ahmed Shide, Agriculture Minister Addisu Arega, and three other ministers led planting activities in different regions, demonstrating how seriously the government takes this nationwide effort.

The numbers tell an incredible story. Since Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed launched the Green Legacy Initiative seven years ago, Ethiopia's forest cover has jumped from 17.2% to 23.6%. Soil erosion has plummeted from 130 tons per hectare to just 54 tons in areas where new trees now grow.

But the benefits go far beyond environmental wins. The initiative has become an economic engine, creating jobs and opening doors to international markets. Ethiopian avocados now reach export shelves thanks to expanded agroforestry programs, bringing in foreign currency and employment opportunities across the agricultural sector.

Water and Energy Minister Habtamu Itefa emphasized that strategic placement matters as much as quantity. The ministry is working on a Smart Village project in Ada'a that combines water resource development, renewable energy, and environmental conservation to restore degraded land while improving rural incomes.

The environmental gains are tangible and measurable. Degraded watersheds have recovered, dried water bodies are flowing again, and dams face less siltation. Planning and Development Minister Fitsum Assefa noted these changes strengthen the country's resilience to climate change while reinforcing food security.

What started as a tree planting campaign has evolved into something deeper. Trade Minister Kassahun Gofe said the initiative plants seeds for prosperity that will benefit future generations. Citizens are planting coffee, fruit trees, and multipurpose seedlings that become productive assets capable of generating wealth.

The country has earned international recognition for showing how environmental restoration can drive economic development rather than compete with it.
