Ethiopia Unveils $17B Budget to Protect Low-Income Families

The East African nation unveiled a record $17 billion spending plan for its upcoming fiscal year, with Finance Minister Ahmed Shide promising special protection for low-income households facing rising living costs. "The budget has been prepared with special consideration for low-income segments of society and is expected to have a positive impact on the livelihoods of Ethiopian families," Shide told the House of People's Representatives. The 32% increase from last year reflects Ethiopia's determination to grow its economy while keeping its most vulnerable citizens safe.

The spending plan targets the basics families need most. Over half the budget will cover essential government services, including subsidies for fertilizer and fuel that directly affect household expenses. Regional governments will receive $3.8 billion to improve local schools, healthcare clinics, and agricultural programs in their communities.

Another $4.1 billion will build roads, energy projects, and irrigation systems designed to create jobs and strengthen the economy long-term. The government set aside an additional $101 million specifically to help regions improve access to basic services and reduce inequality between areas.
