Ethiopia's GERD Doubles Power, Links Neighbors

Ethiopia just doubled its power generation capacity, and the benefits are spreading far beyond its borders.

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) now produces 9.6 gigawatts of electricity, twice what the country generated before completion. In just the past six months, the dam added 1.1 gigawatts of clean energy to the grid.

Water and Energy Minister Habtamu Iteffa says the power surge is transforming both cities and farmland. Industries are expanding in urban centers like Addis Ababa, while rural farmers gain access to irrigation that's strengthening food security nationwide.

The electricity boom isn't stopping at Ethiopia's borders. Nearly 21,000 kilometers of transmission lines now connect the country with neighboring nations, creating new opportunities for trade and shared prosperity.

Rural communities once living off-grid are also getting connected. Those beyond the main power network now access electricity through solar panels, wind turbines, and biogas systems, bringing modern energy to even the most remote areas.

The Ripple Effect

The dam's impact reaches downstream as well. Countries along the Nile basin benefit from more reliable water flow and reduced flood risks, addressing concerns that dominated regional discussions for years.

Ethiopia built the project independently, relying on its own resources and determination. That achievement has sparked pride across the African continent, demonstrating what nations can accomplish through self-reliance.

The government plans to expand benefits further with a new master plan for Lake Nigat and surrounding areas. The initiative will develop fisheries and tourism, creating jobs and economic opportunities for local communities.
