EU Electric Car Sales Jump 49% as Buyers Go Green

European car buyers are voting for the future with their wallets, and the results are electric.

Sales of fully electric vehicles skyrocketed 49% across the European Union in the first three months of 2026 compared to last year. Nearly one in five cars sold during that period was fully electric, marking a major shift in how Europeans get around.

The surge came as overall car sales jumped 12.5% in March alone, reaching 1.16 million vehicles. That strong performance helped the market bounce back after sluggish starts in January and February, ending the quarter up 4% overall.

Hybrid vehicles emerged as the top choice for European consumers, capturing 37% of total sales. Plug-in hybrids added another 10%, while traditional petrol-only cars saw their market share slide from 28% to just 23% in a single year.

The electric revolution played out differently across the continent. Italy, France, and Germany led the charge with strong gains in electric vehicle adoption, while Belgium and the Netherlands saw sales dip.

This shift represents more than just changing consumer preferences. It shows millions of European families actively choosing cleaner transportation options, reducing emissions one car purchase at a time.

Major automakers are responding to the demand. Volkswagen maintained its position as the EU's top seller, while Stellantis brands like Fiat, Citroen, and Opel saw sales surge. Tesla's sales jumped nearly 60% from the previous year's first quarter.
