EU Pledges €3B to Fight Malaria, TB, and HIV
Europe commits over €3 billion to the Global Fund, staying at the forefront of efforts to eliminate three of the world's deadliest diseases. The investment will save millions of lives in countries hit hardest by malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV. #
Europe just made a massive investment in global health, pledging more than €3 billion to fight three diseases that claim millions of lives each year.
The European Commission and EU member states committed the funds to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria for 2027 through 2029. The money will help the world's poorest countries deliver lifesaving treatments and build stronger health systems.
"Global health security is a shared responsibility and a strategic investment in our common future," said Jozef Síkela, European Commissioner for International Partnerships. The pledge makes Europe one of the Global Fund's largest partners since its creation in 2002.
The funding comes at a critical time. More than 10.7 million people contracted tuberculosis in 2024, with 1.2 million dying from the disease. Malaria infected an estimated 282 million people and killed 610,000. Around 40.8 million people worldwide are living with HIV.
Germany led European contributions with €1 billion, while Italy pledged €150 million and the Netherlands committed €195.2 million. The European Commission itself added €700 million to the total.

The Global Fund will focus these resources on countries facing the heaviest disease burdens while helping others build the capacity to eventually fund their own health systems. "We will work with countries to reinforce sustainability and accelerate their journey to self-reliance," said Peter Sands, the Global Fund's executive director.
The Ripple Effect
Europe's commitment does more than fund medicine and doctors. It strengthens entire health systems in dozens of countries, creating infrastructure that will protect communities for generations.
The investment also drives innovation in treatment and expands access to lifesaving tools for people who need them most. By supporting regional manufacturing, the funding helps countries become more self-sufficient over time.
Every euro invested works across borders, protecting global health security and proving that international cooperation can tackle humanity's biggest challenges.
Europe continues leading the fight to make three deadly diseases history.
