EU Renewable Energy Hits 26%, Sweden Leads at 65%

Europe just crossed a clean energy milestone that shows the continent's green transformation is real and growing.

Renewable energy now accounts for 26.2% of all energy consumed across the European Union, according to new data from Eurostat released in July 2026. That's one percentage point higher than the previous year, continuing a steady climb that started back in 2009.

The numbers get even more impressive when you zoom in on electricity alone. Nearly half of all electricity consumed in the EU now comes from renewable sources like wind, solar, and hydro. That's a jump of 2.4 percentage points in just one year.

Sweden is leading the pack by a wide margin, with renewables powering 65.4% of the country's total energy consumption. Finland follows at 53%, while Denmark rounds out the top three at 48.2%. When it comes to electricity specifically, Austria takes the crown with a remarkable 90.8% of its power coming from renewable sources.

The progress isn't uniform across the continent. Belgium sits at the bottom of the rankings with only 14.9% of its energy from renewables, though it performs better on electricity alone at around 33%. Malta, the Czech Republic, and Luxembourg also lag behind in renewable electricity adoption.

Heating and cooling systems are getting greener too. Renewables now account for 27.4% of the EU's heating and cooling energy, up 0.7 percentage points from the previous year.

The Bright Side

While the EU aims for 42.5% renewable energy by 2030, which would require faster progress at 3.3 percentage points annually, the current trajectory shows genuine momentum. Countries like Sweden, Finland, and Austria prove that high renewable energy shares are achievable, providing blueprints for others to follow. Every percentage point represents millions of tons of carbon emissions avoided and cleaner air for communities across Europe.

The steady year-over-year increases show that investment in wind farms, solar panels, and hydroelectric systems is paying off. As technology improves and costs continue to fall, the pace of adoption will likely accelerate.
