EU Solar and Wind Power Beat Fossil Fuels in 2025

The European Union just crossed a line no one thought would happen this soon. In 2025, clean energy from solar panels and wind turbines produced more electricity than coal, oil, and gas combined.

The numbers tell an incredible story. Solar and wind power generated 30% of all EU electricity, while fossil fuels dropped to 29%. That single percentage point represents years of investment, innovation, and commitment finally paying off.

Solar power led the charge with spectacular growth. Production jumped 20.1% in just one year, marking the fourth straight year of more than 20% growth. Solar now provides 13% of the EU's total electricity, overtaking both coal and hydropower for the first time.

The solar revolution reached every corner of Europe. All 27 member countries increased their solar generation. Hungary, Cyprus, Greece, Spain, and the Netherlands now get more than 20% of their electricity from the sun alone.

Coal took the biggest hit in this energy transformation. Its share plummeted to a historic low of 9.2% of EU electricity. In 19 countries, coal either disappeared completely or dropped below 5% of the energy mix.

Overall, renewables now power nearly half of Europe. Clean energy sources generated 48% of total EU electricity in 2025, a milestone that seemed impossible just a decade ago.

The transition wasn't perfectly smooth. Lower rainfall reduced hydropower by 12%, and wind generation dipped 2%. Gas-fired plants had to step in with an 8% increase to keep the lights on. But even with that bump, gas consumption for electricity remains 18% below its 2019 peak.

The Ripple Effect

This breakthrough ripples far beyond Europe's borders. Beatrice Petrovich from energy analytics firm Ember explains that reducing fossil fuel dependence means reducing global instability. When countries control their own clean energy instead of importing expensive gas and oil, they gain both security and savings.

The success proves that rapid energy transitions aren't just possible but profitable. Europe's experience provides a roadmap for other regions ready to embrace solar and wind power at scale.

Analysts say the shift to renewables has become structural, meaning there's no going back. The next priority is building more energy storage systems to smooth out weather-related fluctuations and finally break free from expensive imported gas.

Europe just proved that the clean energy future isn't coming someday; it's already here.
