Europe Hits 1.3 Million EV Charging Points in 2026
Europe's electric vehicle charging network just reached 1.3 million public stations, growing 6% in just four months. But where you charge can mean the difference between paying €4 or €34 for a full tank.
Planning a summer road trip in your electric car across Europe just got a whole lot easier.
The continent now boasts 1.3 million public EV charging points, marking a 6% jump in the first four months of 2026 alone. That's more than a thousand new places to plug in every single day.
But here's where it gets interesting. The cost to fully charge a Tesla Model Y varies wildly depending on where you stop. In Turkey, Ukraine, and Belarus, drivers pay as little as €4 for a full charge. Hungary comes in at €5.69, and Norway at €5.81.
Meanwhile, charging in Ireland, Italy, Germany, Belgium, and the UK will set you back between €30 and €34 for the same full battery, according to Compare the Market. That's nearly an eight-fold difference for the exact same car.
Norway emerges as the surprise winner for road trippers. The Scandinavian nation combines low charging costs with the highest density of fast chargers in Europe at 1.85 stations per 1,000 residents. Denmark, Austria, and Sweden round out the top four.

Fast chargers matter because they use Direct Current technology, meaning you can grab lunch while your car powers up instead of waiting overnight. Germany leads Europe with 54,000 fast charging points, followed by France with 41,000.
The Netherlands claims the overall crown with more than 220,000 total charging stations. That translates to 12 stations per thousand people, putting a charger within easy reach almost anywhere in the country. Germany and France follow with around 200,000 stations each.
The Ripple Effect
EVBoosters, a charging consultancy, points out that raw numbers only tell part of the story now. The mix of fast and slow chargers matters just as much as total count, they say, because it shows whether a country's network is truly ready for long-distance travel or just local commuting.
This infrastructure boom means fewer range anxiety moments and more freedom to explore. As prices drop and stations multiply in eastern Europe, the dream of affordable electric road trips across the entire continent is becoming reality for millions of drivers.
The charging revolution is here, and it's picking up speed.
