Europe Signs 1.4 GW Clean Energy Deals in December

Europe just had its busiest month yet for clean energy commitments, with two dozen major agreements that will power millions of homes with wind and solar.

Polish energy company Energa and EDP Renewables signed December's biggest deal, a 332 megawatt agreement covering wind farms that will soon pair with solar panels. The hybrid approach means more consistent clean power, since the sun and wind rarely stop producing at the same time.

Spain, Italy, and Romania also embraced this mixed approach, combining solar and wind in single agreements. It's a smart strategy that maximizes land use while smoothing out the natural ups and downs of renewable energy.

Battery storage got a major boost too, with nine new deals totaling 311 megawatts. These giant batteries will capture excess solar and wind power during peak production times and release it when people need it most.

Swiss research firm Pexapark tracked the average price of these power agreements at about $53 per megawatt hour. Great Britain saw the biggest price jump at 5.2%, while Poland's prices dropped by 4.2%.

The Ripple Effect

These agreements represent more than just numbers on paper. Every gigawatt of renewable capacity replaces fossil fuel plants, cuts carbon emissions, and creates thousands of jobs in manufacturing, installation, and maintenance.

The mixed technology approach solves one of renewables' biggest challenges: intermittency. When solar panels slow down at sunset, wind turbines often pick up the slack. Add battery storage to the mix, and you have reliable clean power that can compete directly with coal and gas.

Poland's embrace of renewables marks a particularly bright spot. The country has historically relied heavily on coal but is now actively building its clean energy future alongside traditional energy leaders like Spain and Germany.

These 24 deals will generate enough electricity to power roughly 400,000 homes while avoiding millions of tons of carbon emissions every year. That's progress you can measure in cleaner air, stable energy prices, and climate action that matters.
