Europe's Largest Solar Farm Could Power 1 Million Romanians
Romania just cleared a major milestone for the EU's biggest solar farm, a massive clean energy project that could light up nearly one million homes by 2030. The 1.24 GW Dama Solar farm promises jobs, cleaner air, and a nature reserve the size of 115 football fields.
Romania is about to flip the switch on Europe's most ambitious solar project yet, and it could reshape the country's energy future.
The Romanian Energy Regulatory Authority just gave the green light to the Dama Solar farm, confirming that developers have secured the massive funding needed to build it. Located in Arad County near the Hungarian border, this solar powerhouse will dwarf Germany's current record holder when it starts producing electricity in 2030.
The numbers tell an exciting story. With an installed capacity of 1.24 gigawatts, the farm could generate enough clean electricity to power 280,000 households, covering almost one million people. That's roughly double what Romania's entire solar infrastructure produces today.
The timing couldn't be better. Romania has been playing catch up in the renewables race, generating only 9.78 percent of its electricity from solar in 2025 compared to the EU average of 13.1 percent. The country still relies heavily on coal and gas, which together account for over 32 percent of its power generation.

Developer Rezolv Energy is thinking beyond just solar panels. The project will create more than 500 jobs over the next three years, bringing economic opportunity to the region. Plans include adding substantial energy storage to capture excess power during sunny days and use it when demand peaks.
The Ripple Effect
The environmental benefits extend far beyond clean electrons. Much of the farmland will transform into pasture where sheep will graze among the solar panels, naturally managing vegetation. An 82 hectare nature reserve, one of the largest private conservation efforts tied to a solar project in southeastern Europe, will give local wildlife a protected home.
The project shows how infrastructure can actually restore nature rather than destroy it. Agricultural land that struggled to produce crops will become a thriving ecosystem supporting both renewable energy and biodiversity.
For Romania, this represents more than just hitting climate targets. It's about energy independence, cleaner air for families, and proving that catching up is absolutely possible when ambition meets opportunity.
The sun is rising on Romania's clean energy future, and it's shining brighter than ever.
