EV Owners in North Carolina Save Big on Rising Gas Prices

David Fischer bought his electric car without thinking about gas prices. Now, as stations across Eastern Carolina push past $4 a gallon, he feels grateful for the timing.

"I've never noticed that the gas prices have gone up," Fischer said. His electric bill barely budged after making the switch, and charging at home costs him about two cents per kilowatt hour.

The numbers tell a compelling story. Patsy and Harold Davis estimate that fully charging their vehicle's 75-kilowatt-hour battery costs around $6 based on their local electricity rate. That's significantly less than filling a traditional gas tank at current prices.

For Craig Becker, saving money wasn't the original goal. He bought his EV because of environmental concerns, but the financial benefits have become impossible to ignore as fuel costs rise.

"I did it because it was the right thing to do, and I feel like I'm contributing to a healthier environment," Becker said. "But it's also saving me money now, too."

The Bright Side

What stands out most isn't just the savings. It's the empathy EV owners expressed for neighbors who don't have the option to switch or can't afford the upfront cost of an electric vehicle.

"I feel for people who are paying double what they're used to," Fischer said. The Davis family agreed, remembering their own days of watching gas prices climb. "We were there, so we know how it feels to have those bills, plus the gas."

None of these drivers bought their vehicles anticipating a fuel crisis. But the current situation has reinforced something important: small choices can create unexpected benefits, and sometimes good timing feels a lot like luck.

As uncertainty continues around fuel prices, these EV owners aren't gloating about their savings but hoping more people gain access to affordable alternatives that lighten both environmental impact and financial stress.
