Evan Wilkerson Smashes World Record at Para Pan Pacs

Just two years before the Paralympics come to Los Angeles, American swimmers proved they're ready to make history on home soil.

Evan Wilkerson broke the men's 100-meter backstroke world record not once, but twice on Sunday at the Para Pan Pacific Championships in Walnut, California. The Wake Forest athlete clocked 1:04.84 in the morning preliminaries, then stunned everyone by swimming even faster in finals with a jaw-dropping 1:02.62.

The performance was particularly remarkable because Wilkerson had been training at altitude for four months and was reclassified to the S11 category just a month ago. Despite competing outdoors in brutal heat, he dominated his event with confidence.

"It gives me a ton of confidence as we move toward LA," Wilkerson said after his record-breaking swim. "I was able to come here, break the world record in prelims and then go even faster in finals."

Katie Kubiak owned the weekend, collecting six American records across three days of competition. Her final two came Sunday in the 200 individual medley SM5, where she smashed her preliminary time of 3:29.68 by swimming 3:27.29 in finals.

Olivia Chambers joined the record-breaking party with her third American record of the meet, finishing the 50 freestyle S12 in 28.34 seconds. Piper Sadowski matched that feat, setting marks in both the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke.

Ali Truwit continued her inspiring comeback story by breaking her own American record in the S10 100 backstroke with a time of 1:08.40. The achievement earned her a silver medal and her second podium finish of the weekend.

The timing of these performances couldn't be more meaningful. With LA28 just two years away, American para-swimmers are peaking at exactly the right moment while competing on home soil.

Mallory Weggeman, who won gold in the 200 individual medley, captured the team's energy perfectly. "Having Para Pan Pacs on home soil two years out from LA28 is really exciting," she said, noting how the team is marching toward a home Games together.

What makes this weekend even more special is how many athletes are balancing elite performance with family life and recent changes. Weggeman switched coaches this year and intentionally downshifted training to spend more time with her daughter Charlotte, yet still posted impressive times while training through the competition.

Team USA finished tied with Brazil in the medal count with 16 total medals, including six golds. The Americans set 13 records over three days, proving that preparation for the Los Angeles Paralympics is right on track.
