Family of 6 Trades House for Caravan to Reconnect on Tour

When Australian singer Tom Busby kept leaving his wife Huma alone with four young children to chase touring gigs, they realized something had to change. Their solution? Pack all six family members into a caravan and hit the road together.

Tom and Huma met backstage in Sydney in 2011 when Tom wore a fake blue velvet jacket and tried to impress her with Pete Murray concert tickets. She didn't even know who Pete Murray was, but they started dating anyway across thousands of miles between Australia and her home in Houston, Texas.

Fast forward to today, and they have four children ranging from age four to ten. Tom's music career with Busby Marou meant constant touring, leaving Huma to handle everything solo at home. When she traveled for work, he'd take over, and they became what Tom calls "ships in the night."

The breaking point came when Tom realized he was missing bucket-list Australian gigs like Big Red Bash and Mundi Mundi while his kids stayed home. During a six-week family trip to America last year to record Tom's album, they discovered how good life could be when they stayed together.

So they made a radical choice. They sold their stable home life, bought a caravan, and started homeschooling their kids on the road. Now Tom plays solo gigs to fund their travels while building his new album, and Huma teaches Winifred, Marigold, Henrietta, and Herbert between stops.

The Busbys admit they're literally living gig to gig financially, but they say they've never been happier. Huma noticed the shift immediately: "We have less, but we've got a lot more." The marriage tension she expected from cramped caravan quarters never materialized because they're finally sharing responsibilities instead of tag-teaming parenthood from opposite corners.

Today was their first official day of road homeschool. Tom handled work while Huma taught lessons, a simple division of labor that feels revolutionary after years of solo parenting stretches.

Tom hopes that when they eventually return to normal life in a year or two, they'll have learned to slow down permanently. "We'll have stopped racing, or if we are racing, it's for the right reasons," he says.

Sometimes the best way forward is to literally change direction and bring everyone along for the ride.
