Family Turns Grief Into Kindness on Daughter's Birthday

When Jessie Way's birthday arrives this year, her parents don't want "happy heavenly birthday" messages. They want kindness passed forward in her name.

Danette and Tray Way are asking their Manning, South Carolina community to mark what would have been Jessie's 32nd birthday on September 4th with random acts of kindness instead. Their daughter died at 31 following a crash involving an allegedly impaired driver, leaving behind her children and a grieving community.

"This is not a happy occasion," Danette Way wrote in a social media post. "Our hearts remain shattered in pieces."

But from that heartbreak comes a meaningful request. The Ways are encouraging anyone thinking of Jessie to say a prayer for her children or perform a kind act in her memory.

The community has already shown up for Jessie's family in powerful ways. Earlier this year, supporters organized the Live Like Jessie Adult Prom & Benefit at The Grill in downtown Manning, raising money for her children's education expenses while celebrating the things Jessie loved: dressing up, dancing, and plenty of sparkle.

Now the "Live Like Jessie" message continues, but with a different tone. The Ways want September 4th to be about putting good into the world rather than marking a birthday their daughter can't celebrate.

The acts don't need to be grand gestures. Paying for someone's coffee, helping a neighbor, offering a meal, or leaving an encouraging note all count as ways to remember Jessie.
