Fan Catches MLB Debut Home Run in Hat He Bought 10 Minutes Earlier

Bruce Roberts grabbed the Yankees cap off his head and thrust it skyward as the baseball screamed toward him at Yankee Stadium. When he brought it back down, he couldn't believe his eyes: George Lombard Jr.'s home run ball was sitting inside the hat he'd bought just 10 minutes earlier.

The moment was electric for everyone involved. Lombard, 21, had just crushed his first major league hit in his highly anticipated debut Tuesday night, giving the Yankees a 2-0 lead over the St. Louis Cardinals. The blast traveled 392 feet with an exit velocity of 100.2 mph.

Roberts, an Army veteran from Utah, was at the game with his wife Marie and son Cash to celebrate Cash's 12th birthday. The family had traveled from Utah to see New York's iconic sights, and 12-year-old Cash, a Little League pitcher, wanted to catch a Yankees game.

Roberts had considered seats behind home plate but decided at the last minute to try left field. "Maybe one of the balls will come close and it will be exciting," he told reporters afterward. He had no idea how right he'd be.

After the incredible catch, stadium security approached Roberts about trading the ball back to Lombard. Roberts agreed immediately, receiving signed baseballs and a chance to meet the rookie. But the generosity didn't stop there.

Lombard walked out to meet the family after the game, handing them a signed black bat. His father, George Lombard Sr., also came over to thank Roberts with a handshake. "Hopefully he'll hit a few more, and you guys will catch a few more," the proud dad said.
