Fanatics Sportsbook Bans Bettors Who Threaten Athletes

Athletes have been sharing terrifying messages from angry bettors for years, but now the sports betting industry is finally fighting back.

Fanatics Sportsbook announced a groundbreaking Bad Actor Program that will track down and ban customers who threaten or harass athletes on social media. The initiative launches at the start of football season and marks the first time a major sportsbook has taken concrete action to protect players from online abuse.

The program works by monitoring social media platforms for threatening content directed at athletes, coaches, and officials. When someone crosses the line from frustration into harassment, they get added to a database that blocks them from placing bets with participating sportsbooks.

"There is no sports betting loss that should embolden a customer to threaten or harass an athlete online," said Matt King, CEO of Fanatics Betting and Gaming. The company will suspend or permanently terminate accounts of anyone engaging in abusive conduct.

The need is urgent. Tennis player Arthur Bouquier once received a message from a bettor threatening to track down and hurt him and his family over a 2,000 euro wager. "I will come after you," the message read, detailing plans to find Bouquier even if it meant going to prison.

These aren't isolated incidents. Athletes across every sport have shared screenshots of vulgar threats and harassment from bettors who lost money on their performance.

The program partners with Integrity Compliance 360 and Signify Group to analyze threats and escalate serious cases to law enforcement when behavior crosses into criminal territory. Athletes can also report abusive direct messages directly to speed up the process.

This initiative could transform how the entire sports betting industry operates. Fanatics is openly encouraging competitors to join the program, creating an industry-wide standard that puts athlete safety above profits.

The message is clear: betting on sports is entertainment, not an excuse for abuse. When customers understand their betting privileges depend on respectful behavior, the culture around sports gambling shifts from toxic to accountable.
