Farmer Saves Orangutan From Borneo Wildfire

When Jais walked to his farm on a Sunday morning in West Kalimantan, he spotted something moving on the ground near a palm oil plantation. An orangutan lay weak and struggling just beyond the reach of the forest fires scorching Borneo island.

The farmer didn't hesitate. He gave the distressed animal water and immediately called for backup from his neighbors.

Two hours later, a wildlife rehabilitation foundation arrived with a veterinarian. By then, the exhausted orangutan had fainted from smoke exposure and weakness, but help had arrived in time.

The rescue team named her Sampurna after the village where she was found. She's now receiving treatment for respiratory illness caused by the intense smoke blanketing the region.

Indonesia has been battling massive wildfires across six provinces in Borneo and Sumatra. From January to July, fires burned at least 202,010 hectares of land, nearly double the 107,465 hectares burned through June alone.

The smoke has forced thousands of schools to move classes online in Indonesia and neighboring Malaysia as respiratory illnesses spike across the region.
