Farmers Turn Cattle From Climate Problem to Solution

What if the animals blamed for accelerating climate change could actually help reverse it?

That's exactly what's happening as farmers and scientists team up across continents to reimagine how we raise livestock. Through the Food Systems, Land Use and Restoration (FOLUR) Impact Program, communities from Ukraine to Brazil are discovering innovative ways to make cattle, pigs, and poultry work with nature instead of against it.

The stakes couldn't be higher. Livestock currently supports 1.3 billion people worldwide and provides 34 percent of global protein through meat, eggs, and milk. These animals also serve as vital "bank accounts" for small farmers, offering financial security during droughts and emergencies.

But the current system carries enormous environmental costs. Livestock value chains produce 14.5 percent of all human-caused greenhouse gas emissions, with cattle alone responsible for two-thirds of that total. Agriculture drives three-quarters of tropical deforestation as forests are cleared for pastures and feed crops.

The challenge grows more urgent each year. With the global population heading toward 10 billion by 2050, demand for animal products could jump 70 percent. Meeting that need without destroying the planet seemed impossible until now.

In Brazil's capital city of Brasília, government representatives, farmers, and environmental groups recently gathered to share their success stories. The Regional Dialogue brought together people who've proven sustainable livestock isn't just a dream but a working reality.

"Livestock provides essential food for people but also contributes to the financial stability of the country," says Inna Hoch, a national technical analyst at UNDP Ukraine. Her team is protecting Ukraine's precious peatlands while maintaining productive farms.

Arnoud Hameleers from the International Fund for Agricultural Development explains why this matters for small farmers: "They need a banking system, and livestock can be that." The goal is keeping that security while protecting forests, soil, and water systems.

The Ripple Effect

The transformation happening on these farms reaches far beyond individual properties. When livestock operations protect rather than destroy ecosystems, they preserve the clean water, healthy soil, and stable climate that all agriculture depends on. The 500 million pastoralists and rangeland communities whose cultures center on livestock can maintain their traditions while becoming climate champions. Every farm that shifts from deforestation to regeneration proves we can feed a growing world without sacrificing the planet.
