Faroe Islands Lake Appears to Float Above the Ocean

Even the lake's name sparks friendly debate among locals. Residents of the western village of Sørvágur call it Sørvágsvatn, meaning "the lake by Sørvágur." People living east of the lake prefer Leitisvatn, or "the lake by Leiti."

The naming argument dates back centuries, as Sørvágur was settled first during the ninth century. But to keep the peace, most locals simply call it Vatnið, which just means "the lake."
