🦸 Hero Alert

An ordinary dad and his 23-year-old son just pedaled 30,000 kilometers across 30 countries, proving that epic adventures aren't just for professional athletes. Their 400-day journey raised money for charity and shattered three world records along the way.

When Chinese police stopped George and Josh Kohler on top of the Tibetan Plateau, 4,000 meters above sea level, the father-son duo thought their around-the-world cycling dream might be over. Instead, one officer recognized them from social media, asked for a selfie, and helped escort them safely to the next city.

That moment perfectly captures the spirit of their incredible 400-day journey. George, 57, and Josh, 23, just completed a 30,000-kilometer bike ride across 30 countries, breaking three world records in the process.

The Norfolk pair set records for fastest father-son circumnavigation by bicycle, longest bicycle journey by father and son, and most countries cycled through by a father and son. But the records were never the main goal.

"We're just an ordinary father and son that went out on quite a long bike ride," George says. Their real mission was threefold: challenge themselves, raise funds for UNICEF and a local bicycle charity, and inspire others to pursue their own adventures.

The journey began five years ago when Josh, still in school, heard adventurer Leon McCarron speak about cycling across America. He convinced his dad to buy bikes, and after a test ride from Land's End to John O'Groats, they tackled New York to San Francisco together. When Josh proposed going global, George didn't hesitate.

The pair faced brutal challenges along the way. They battled 46-degree Celsius heat crossing southern Australia, with headwinds or crosswinds for 56 out of 60 days. Josh got attacked by bees climbing a Kyrgyzstan mountain pass, then dropped his bike on his foot.

They fueled their 200-kilometer days with whatever they could find, including pig brain, chicken feet, and frog porridge. "We were burning through 4,000 to 5,000 calories a day," George explains.

The Ripple Effect

Their homecoming tells the real story of their impact. Seventy strangers cycled the final 25 kilometers with them into their village of Halvergate, where over 100 people waited to applaud, including a Guinness World Records official.

The journey took a year of planning and 400 days of pedaling through yak-dotted valleys, treeless deserts, and mountain passes. Along the way, they relied on the kindness of strangers for meals and shelter, slept in their tent beside the Yellow River, and shared their adventure on social media.

"It's hard for us to comprehend what we've actually achieved," George admits. Four days after finishing, the magnitude is still sinking in.

Their message resonates because it's so beautifully simple: if an ordinary father and son can cycle around the world, anyone can pursue their own adventure, however big or small.
