FBI Agent Honored for Protecting Connecticut Jewish Community

When hate crimes rise, real heroes step up with real solutions.

Michael Shanbrom spent his career as an FBI Special Agent protecting Americans from threats. Now retired, he's channeling that expertise into something deeply personal: helping Jewish communities across Connecticut stay safe during a troubling surge in antisemitic incidents.

On May 17, the Brotherhood at B'nai Israel Southbury welcomed Shanbrom for a community breakfast focused on safety and awareness. More than a dozen community members gathered to learn practical steps they could take to protect themselves and their neighbors.

Shanbrom currently serves as Regional Security Advisor for the Secure Community Network and the Jewish Federation of Western Connecticut. In his new role, he travels across the state teaching situational awareness and security measures designed specifically for houses of worship and community centers.

His presentation came at a critical time. Following the October 7 attacks in Israel, Jewish communities across America have faced increased threats and violence. Shanbrom's message focuses on empowerment through preparation rather than fear.

Southbury First Selectman Tim O'Neil attended the breakfast in a show of solidarity. His presence sent a clear message that keeping all community members safe is a shared responsibility.

The Ripple Effect

Shanbrom's impact extends far beyond one Sunday morning breakfast. Through his work with the Secure Community Network, he's training dozens of Connecticut congregations on everything from identifying suspicious behavior to building relationships with local law enforcement.

Each community he trains becomes better equipped to protect not just themselves, but to serve as a model for others. His approach combines federal law enforcement expertise with genuine care for the people he serves.

The Brotherhood recognized this dedication by presenting Shanbrom with their Community Hero Award. The honor acknowledges his ongoing commitment to protecting lives and strengthening security initiatives statewide.
