FBI Returns 400-Year-Old Stolen Church Urn to Italy

A centuries-old religious treasure stolen from a small Italian church has found its way home, thanks to detective work that stretched across two continents.

The FBI announced in late April that it recovered a stunning 17th-century reliquary urn, one of 17 sacred artifacts stolen from the Church of San Michele Arcangelo di Cangiano between 2012 and 2022. The ornate, gilded Baroque piece was designed to hold Catholic relics and represents a significant piece of Italian religious history.

Church officials discovered the urn was missing during a routine inventory in November 2022. From there, investigators began piecing together clues that would eventually lead them across the Atlantic.

The trail ended with a New England antiques dealer who had purchased the urn from another dealer in Italy. The buyer had no idea the beautiful artifact was stolen property protected under agreements between Italy and the Vatican City State.

FBI agents interviewed the dealer on February 11, examining the urn and learning how it changed hands. When they explained the artifact's true origin, the dealer immediately agreed to return it.

"We do not know how or who stole the urn from the church, but we do know it was sold to a New England-based antiques dealer and shipped to the United States," said Kristen Setera, spokesperson for the FBI's Boston office. The agency worked closely with Italian authorities and Italy's Ministry of Culture throughout the investigation.

The Ripple Effect

Special Agent Ted E. Docks called the recovery "incredibly exciting," noting that the urn is far more than just a beautiful object. "This reliquary urn is a tangible link to intense religious devotion and a connection to the generations who lived and prayed with it," he said.

The artifact represents the intersection of faith, history, and art. For the people of Cangiano, its return means reconnecting with a piece of their spiritual heritage that spans four centuries.

Italy held a formal repatriation ceremony on April 29, welcoming the urn back to its rightful home. The recovery shows how international cooperation and the willingness of one dealer to do the right thing can restore what was lost.
