FDA Approves New Covid Vaccines Targeting XFG Variant

Americans at higher risk for severe Covid can now access vaccines specifically designed to fight the virus as it exists today.

The FDA approved updated vaccines from Moderna, Novavax-Sanofi, and Pfizer-BioNTech on Thursday. All three target the XFG variant, which currently dominates Covid cases across the country.

The vaccines are available for anyone 65 and older. Younger people with underlying health conditions that increase their Covid risk can also get protected, though age requirements vary slightly by manufacturer.

Moderna's shot works for children six months and up. Pfizer-BioNTech covers kids five and older, while Novavax-Sanofi starts at age 12.

All three companies confirmed they produced enough doses in time for the 2026-27 immunization season. Shipments to pharmacies and doctors' offices are already underway.

Without a functioning CDC advisory panel to issue formal guidance, insurers might handle coverage differently than in past years.

Still, the science worked, the vaccines arrived on schedule, and protection is available for those who need it most.
