FDA Approves New Once-Daily HIV Pill for Resistant Cases

The FDA just approved Bixlenvo, a once-daily pill that's opening new doors for people living with HIV who have run out of treatment options.

The new medication, created by Gilead Sciences, combines two powerful ingredients into one tiny pill. It targets about 5% of HIV patients in the United States who can't use current single-pill treatments, mostly older adults with complicated treatment histories.

Timothy Cameron knows that struggle better than most. The 64-year-old Seattle resident has been living with HIV for more than four decades, starting from his diagnosis in the 1980s when treatment options were scarce and often brutal.

"It was just like throwing darts at a dartboard," Cameron told CNBC about his early treatment years. He cycled through experimental drugs and multi-pill regimens that came with serious side effects, only to have his virus develop resistance to nearly everything.

After surviving those difficult decades, Cameron finally joined the clinical trial for Bixlenvo. The transition was seamless, and the medication has kept his HIV suppressed without notable side effects.

The pill he now takes is "smaller than my pinky nail," a welcome relief after years of complex regimens. "It's one less thing I'm putting in my body, and it preserves options if I need them," he said.

The medication costs $4,595 monthly before discounts, similar to other single-pill treatments. Those without insurance may qualify for free access through Gilead's patient assistance program, and insured patients may get copay support.
